based on my experience, from elementary untill highschool we're learn pretty much same thing. such as tenses, type of text, dialogue, writting text, etc. they're just like different level in highschool. but many of my friends that only learn english from school only can make text and dialogue in formal way. they feel difficult in making essay or write their own oppinion that not formal. but in fact, people talking english is not allways based on tenses and grammar. americans, they don't give a damn at grammar as long as they know what you're saying about. grammar is important when you write a damn formal letter which we rarely do that. i don't even think about grammar when i write this, and i'm sorry if this messy. i just write what i'm thinking right now.
i think when i watch movies, they're thought me more than what school thought me. first you may watch it with subtittle on and soon you feel that you don't need subtittle anymore. read english books was also helped me. you may find it hard at first but the important thing is you know what the book says about, right? if you find strange words, you can write and translate it, then your vocabullary is upgraded.
so i think, my hobbies (watch movies and read books/articles) are moooooreee effective than school. fyi, i don't like tenses and grammar material. but school also help me to learn how to write anythinng in a good way.
